James Island County Park, Charleston, SC
New tires on the truck and “Biggie” in tow, we slowly made our way through the narrow streets of Charleston, lined with towering live oaks draped in Spanish Moss. It felt like a bit like a secret escape when we spotted the sign for James Island County Park, and thankfully arriving just moments before sunset, with just enough daylight to find our site and get backed in beneath the shady canopy of moss draped from ancient branches. A safe haven after a somewhat stressful day of roadside “adventure.”
Spacious Campsites You’ll Actually Want to Spend Time In
One of the first things we noticed was how roomy the campsites are. Unlike many commercial campgrounds where you’re practically sharing a picnic table with your neighbors, James Island offers generous sites tucked beneath mature trees. It’s a perfect place to linger for a week or two, with so much to do all around you - and when you run out of things to do in the park, the historical city of Charleston is just around the corner. And the trees, the glorious ancient trees bless the campground like a safety net from the South Carolina summer heat, like nature’s air-conditioning.
Most RV sites include full hookups with 20/30/50-amp service, paved roads, picnic tables, grills, and fire rings. The campground also has spotless bathhouses, laundry facilities, a camp store, free Wi-Fi, propane, and a staffed office that makes checking in easy. (Charleston County Parks and Recreation).
A Paradise for Dog Owners
If your dogs travel everywhere with you like ours do, James Island feels incredibly welcoming.
Every morning started with long walks along miles of paved trails winding through marshes, lakes, and forests. Simon loved exploring every new scent while Prudence happily trotted beside us. There are countless quiet roads throughout the campground for enjoyable morning and evening strolls, with variety of sights, sounds and don’t forget the best part for the pups - the “smells.”
The campground is also home to one of the nicest dog parks we’ve visited during our travels. Large fenced areas give energetic pups room to run off-leash, while owners relax beneath the shade. There is also a generously-sized pond for swimming. There were lots of dogs the day we visited and so many in fact, that we decided to skip the park and continue on our walk around the park.

The campground feels thoughtfully designed. The sites are spacious and the park is beautifully maintained. There’s enough to do that families never get bored, yet it’s peaceful enough to enjoy a quiet evening around the fire.
More Than Just A Campground
James Island was once made up of plantations, agricultural land, forests and tidal marshes. The island played an important role in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, guarding the approach to Charleston Harbor. In the late 20th century, Charleston County acquired and developed the 643 acres to create a park combining recreation with environmental stewardship. While you are enjoying all of the activities in the park, it’s easy to forget that its just a few minutes from downtown Charleston and a mere 15 minutes from Folly Beach.

In just a short drive you can be wandering the colorful streets of historic Charleston, browsing local shops, enjoying incredible restaurants and breweries, or walking along The Battery. We spent an afternoon at Edmund’s Oast Brewing Co enjoying some incredible and unique beer. We dined at some magnificent restaurants, Chez Nous, which feels like you’re attending a secret dinner party at the home of one of the world’s most talented chefs; and Husk, the creation of Sean Brock, one of the most influential chefs of Southern cuisine.

Whether you’re staying for a weekend or a full week, James Island County Park offers the best of both worlds; peaceful camping beneath majestic oaks, easy access to beaches, history, great food and shopping and outdoor adventures.
